To access the remote Windows desktop from the Mac, you should simply double click on the computer's icon and then enter the authentication credentials when prompted. The most well known remote desktop tools on Windows are Microsoft Remote Desktop and Citrix Receiver. However, neither are the best remote desktop software for Mac users. Unsurprisingly, Microsoft Remote Desktop is mainly designed for Windows users and has various problems on Mac although admittedly is has improved in recent versions.
Before you begin you will need to download and install the Mac version of the Remote Desktop Gateway from the Apple app store. It is available here.
- Launch the Remote Desktop App
- Click the New button
- Select Gateway drop down and choose add a gateway
- Create a new Gateway
- Make sure the Gateway tab is selected
- Click the + button to add a new server
- Title the new server qdg.queensu.ca
- Enter your netid@queensu.ca user name. Note: this is your netid.
- Enter your netID password. These will be saved
- Close the window to save your information
- Create a new Remote Desktop connection using the gateway you just created
- Enter the host computer's name or IP number
To connect to the Remote Access Server, enter its-ts03.ad.queensu.ca - Close the screen to save your information

- When you open Microsoft Remote Desktop your connection will show in the My desktops section
- Click your connection to open it
